For the sixth consecutive year, Anchor Bay will be hosting the MSBOA District Band Festival. On Friday March 5, and Saturday, March 6, about 2,000 students, representing over 20 ensembles, will be coming to Anchor Bay High School to perform.
This offers us a wonderful opportunity to shine -- again. Last year's hosting was so successful that school band directors once again rushed to grab the spots available this year.
We're looking forward to another great festival, but it takes an army of volunteers to pull it off. On behalf of the Anchor Bay Band Boosters, I'd like to thank those parents who have already come forward and to invite those who are willing to drop me a line. Even if you can afford only two or three hours, we can put you to use -- as a parking-lot guide, loading-dock worker, concessionaire, guide, etc. Another way to contribute is by donating some of the items that we are in need to run the concessions area - CLICK HERE for those needs. Please email myself or Debbie Esser at esser54@comcast.net if you wish to help in this area.
Please call me at (586) 725-7917 or email me at llpetix@gmail.com if interested in volunteering.
On Friday, February 12th, the ABHS Jazz Ensemble will be performing at the annual Central Michigan University Jazz Weekend. The performance is in the School of Music auditorium (time, TBA). The students will be leaving on Thursday (2/11), and returning on Saturday (2/13) in the morning.
Please click HERE for more information including the medical form and permission slip.
Friday evening, the band and chaperons will be attending the feature concert with guest artist, jazz trumpeter and composer, Nicholas Payton.

Students in Cadet Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble are issued a ?Concert Uniform? at the beginning of the school year. The uniforms are worn for the Winter Concert, the Pre-Festival Concerts, the MSBOA District 16 Band Festival, and the Spring Concert.
The girls? uniform consists of an ankle-length skirt. This skirt may need to be hemmed. If you are having difficulty getting your garment hemmed, Diamond Laundry in ChesterfieldTownship will hem the skirt at a very reasonable price.A black blouse and black dress shoes (with an approximate 1" heel) are required. The girls in Wind Ensemble are issued an ankle-length black dress. The shoe requirement is the same.
All boys are issued a 4-piece tuxedo: pants, coat, cummerbund, and bow tie.The pants may need to be hemmed.Like the skirts, Diamond Laundry in ChesterfieldTownship will hem the pants at a very reasonable price.A white tuxedo shirt and black dress shoes are required.
These concert uniforms are very expensive and must be treated accordingly.Do not leave your concert uniform at school.Your uniform will be clean when it is received. If you get your uniform dirty, it is your duty to have it cleaned.AnchorBay Bands work with Diamond Laundry in ChesterfieldTownship.
The uniforms will be returned for cleaning and summer storage. In most cases, the students will receive the same uniform next year (depending on growth).
Thanks for your help in making our concert ensembles look and sound their best!
There was a nice article about some Macomb County marching bands in the 9/25/08 edition of the Macomb Daily. The Marching Tars were featured, throughout!
On April 20, 2006, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm signed into law one of the most comprehensive sets of high school graduation requirements in the nation called the Michigan Merit Curriculum (or MMC). This law is a result of a partnership between Governor Granholm, the State Board of Education, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Legislature, and numerous education associations who worked together to better prepare students for greater future success.
Please read the FULL STORY on the next page for information on how this affects students who will be signing up for a band class in high school.

Those with More Education and Higher Household Incomes are More Likely to Have Had Music Education
Music education Influences Level of Personal Fulfillment for Many U.S. Adults
Whether it?s chorus, band, or just violin lessons, music impacts Americans? lives. While singing in a chorus or playing an instrument is fun, it can also provide important skills like creative problem solving that can help lead to higher education and incomes as well as personal fulfillment.
The researchers concluded that...
One thing is clear, music education is an important part of people?s lives and it definitely has an impact on their later lives. It also prepares people differently as we see that those who had more music education are more likely to be better educated and also have higher household incomes. It is also not just music education in general, specific types of music seem to almost ?wire? people to think slightly differently about their music experiences overall, as well as what they can get out of music education.
Vocal lessons and garage bands are the two categories which drive people to think more strongly about what music education provides. The time spent in music is also important. While all people who had music education may think about it in a certain way, those who participated for more than five years are more likely to say how influential it was to their current level of personal fulfillment. These people are also more likely to be better educated and have higher household incomes as well. The bottom line of this is that those who have music education and who spend more time with whatever type of music they participate in, even a garage band, are more likely to have more education and to have higher incomes - definitely, two very good reasons to instill music in children?s lives.
