David P. Kleckner is in his 28th year of teaching in Michigan, the past 22 in the Anchor Bay School District. He started as a general music instructor of third through sixth graders, including fifth and sixth grade band students. As the district’s music program has grown, he has focused on the middle school band program. Currently, he serves as Director of Bands at Anchor Bay Middle School-North, where he works with students in grades sixth thru eighth. In 2003, his Anchor Bay 9th Grade Symphonic Band performed at the Michigan Music In-service Conference.
A Michigan native, Mr. Kleckner has played trumpet for thirty-nine years and studied with various teachers, including James Tamborini, former Detroit Symphony principal trumpet player. Mr. Kleckner graduated from Northville High School in 1974 and received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Wayne State University.
Mr. Kleckner has been a private instructor and has taught lessons for many music stores, working with French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and trumpet players in the Livonia, Redford, Northville, Novi, Anchor Bay, Marysville, and Port Huron school districts. In the 1980s, he attended the Detroit School for Piano Technicians, where he served as an apprentice in 1983-84.
He has performed with a variety of bands, including Joe Vitale’s, and has backed numerous acts, among them Danny Thomas, Lou Rawls, The Four Tops, and The Temptations.
In 2004 , Mr. Kleckner realized a longtime dream by founding the Anchor Bay Community Band in New Baltimore, Michigan. He thoroughly enjoys the professional challenge of working with and conducting a Band consisting of members of all ages and abilities. The Anchor Bay Community Band has begun a fine tradition of bringing music to the Bay area community throughout the summer months and during the winter holiday season.
